A veteran blueliner is going to miss some time due to injury.
On Monday, the Pittsburgh Penguins announced that the team has placed defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk on injured reserve.
The 35-year-old appeared in the first five games of the 2026-27 season, but wasn’t in the lineup this past Saturday night, when the Penguins hosted the Dallas Stars. Van Riemsdyk was ruled out with the lower-body injury and was originally listed as day-to-day.
Per the NHL’s IR rules, TVR won’t be eligible to return to the lineup until this coming Saturday, when Pittsburgh takes on the Vegas Golden Knights. That means he’ll miss Tuesday night’s matchup with the Chicago Blackhawks, as well as the Pens’ first game of their Mountain Time road trip against the Colorado Avalanche.
So far this season, the Middletown, N.J. native has yet to register a point, but has a plus/minus of -1 while averaging 18:48 of ice time, amassing four penalty minutes.
Van Riemsdyk is in his first season with Pittsburgh after signing a two-year contract with the club this past July. The deal carries an AAV of $4 million through the 2027-28 campaign. He came to the Steel City after spending the last six seasons with the Washington Capitals, where he was a solid depth blueliner on a team that consistently competed for a playoff spot. He was limited to just 68 games in 2025-26, scoring three goals and 14 points, with a +6 rating and an average time-on-ice of 16:14.
In 756 regular-season games in his NHL career, which started with the Blackhawks over a decade ago and featured three years with the Carolina Hurricanes, TVR has notched 28 goals and 133 assists for 161 points, with another six points in 45 postseason contests.
